We Need Shamans – If Society Doesn’t Provide Them, the Universe Will
Joe Lewels
In today’s fast-paced world, many people search for healing, meaning, and a deeper understanding of their lives. Joe Lewels’ words, “We need shamans, and if society doesn’t provide them, the universe will,” speak to a collective yearning for spiritual connection and ancient wisdom.
- But what does it truly mean for the world to need shamans?
- And why is it inevitable that the universe will intervene if society doesn’t make space for them?
The Shaman Within
Shamans represent healing, wisdom, and a bridge to higher realms. Across cultures, they’re seen as mediators between the physical and spiritual worlds—realms invisible, yet undeniably powerful for those who seek to understand them. This longing for shamans speaks to a shared need to reconnect with spirit, an archetype alive in us all.
The idea that shamans are solely born into indigenous traditions seems limiting. Can the universe—or a Creator—really rely on human judgment alone to identify those who are meant to serve humanity in this way? An all-knowing force, seeing deeply into hearts and souls, would surely select those ready to serve, people with open hearts who are willing to stand courageously in service. If I were the universe, I wouldn’t leave such an important role to human discernment alone; I would choose those with the courage and authenticity needed to lead others on this path.
Beyond Healing
A shaman isn’t just a healer. They are keepers of wisdom, spiritual guides, and often teachers, helping others explore the depths of their souls and integrate their inner shadows. In a world largely dominated by rational thought, shamans play a crucial role, reminding us that true healing is holistic—that it involves the body, mind, and soul.
When Shamans Are Absent
In many western societies today, traditional shamans are absent, and the profound need they fulfill isn’t met by therapists, coaches, or psychologists alone. These fields provide valuable insights, but they often lack a spiritual dimension. Without shamanic wisdom, people may feel a void—a sense of missing something greater—which can manifest as existential crises, depression, or chronic illnesses linked to a loss of connection.
A Universal Awakening
Lewels’ statement, “if society doesn’t provide them, the universe will,” suggests that this need for shamans cannot be ignored. In recent years, people around the world have unexpectedly felt drawn to the shamanic path, seeking healing and spiritual growth. The universe seems to awaken shamans from diverse backgrounds, often those who have gone through profound personal transformations and feel called to guide others. In my view, these modern shamans may not fit traditional molds, but they hold the same mission: bringing spiritual depth and balance back to humanity.
A New Path
As the value of shamanic wisdom becomes more widely recognized, we must consider how to make space for it in society.
- Could shamans have roles within healthcare or education?
- Or will they remain on society’s fringes, working quietly yet profoundly to heal the spirit?
The challenge lies in integrating spirituality and rationality, as both are essential for true healing. Shamans will continue to bring light to the shadows, whether through the hand of the universe or by conscious choice. Joe Lewels’ words remind us of the universe’s natural desire for balance. Shamans, whether from ancient or modern paths, serve as guides on our journey toward inner harmony. If society doesn’t provide them, the universe will always find a way to bring them to us.
Practical Exercises to Connect with Shamanic Wisdom
If you feel a connection to shamanic wisdom or are curious about this path, these simple exercises can help you explore its healing power.
- Nature as Teacher
Spend time in nature, whether it’s a forest or your backyard. Sit quietly, breathe deeply, and ask, “What does this place have to teach me today?” Stay open and note any insights that come. - Sacred Breathwork
Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and focus on your breath. With each inhale, imagine drawing in clarity; with each exhale, release stress. After 5-10 minutes, sit in silence and note any feelings or messages that arise. - Reflective Journaling
Begin with the prompt: “If the universe were calling me to be a healer, what might that look like?” Let yourself write freely, without judgment, and see what insights come to the surface. - Visualize Your Guide
Close your eyes and imagine yourself in a safe place. Picture a wise guide, or animal, coming to stand beside you. Ask a question, or simply feel their presence, and afterward, write down what you experienced. - Create a Ritual
Light a candle, set an intention, or say a prayer of gratitude. Perform this ritual daily or weekly as a way to ground yourself and honor your journey.
