I love spending hours walking along the water, watching dragonflies. They glide through the air with such ease, like miniature drones or helicopters, tracing their circles as if exploring their surroundings, always aware of the world around them. The dragonfly is not only beautiful but also a beloved power animal. If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you know that each power animal holds a unique meaning and symbolism for every person. Here, I offer you some insights into the messages the dragonfly might bring into your life. This is my interpretation of this spiritual companion.
As a shamanic totem animal, the dragonfly embodies a reflection of our soul. It reminds us that we are capable of moving freely and lightly through the various levels of life. Much like the dragonfly, we fly between worlds, between the seen and the unseen. Because the dragonfly shimmers so beautifully, it’s also colloquially called a “Schillerbold” (a dazzling or flamboyant person). Its iridescent colors and graceful movements constantly remind me of the beauty and diversity of nature.
Story of the Dragonfly Spirit Animal
There’s a popular story told about the dragonfly as a power animal that I’d like to share with you. It is said that the goddess Frigg was healed by a dragonfly.
In a time when nature was still full of magic and secrets, there lived a goddess who was revered by many people. Frigg was her name, and she ruled over marriage and family. But one day, she was struck by an illness that almost cost her her life. Desperate and alone, she turned to the being that always protected her: the dragonfly power animal.
As a spirit animal, the dragonfly was known for its dexterity, agility, and speed, but also for its wisdom and intelligence. Frigg believed in the power of the dragonfly and followed its advice to be healed. The dragonfly told her that she could only be healed at the mysterious spring in the forest, and so Frigg set off.
On her journey through the forest, Frigg encountered many challenges, but thanks to her strong will and her faith in the power of the dragonfly, she finally managed to reach the secret spring. There, she drank three times from the clear, healing water and immediately felt strengthened and freed from her illness.
Grateful for the help of her power animal, Frigg decided to honor the dragonfly and make it her symbol. From then on, the dragonfly was considered the symbol of dexterity, agility, and protection, and Frigg ruled her kingdom with wisdom.
Why was the dragonfly able to heal Frigg? Because it heals the soul. So when the dragonfly comes into your life, it wants to show you that there is an injury on the soul level that you may bring into healing. If you make contact with it on a shamanic journey, it will show you how.

It’s no surprise that the dragonfly has become a symbol of transformation and change for many people. It’s said that anyone who encounters a dragonfly as their power animal is inspired by its energy and wisdom, embarking on a journey of inner healing.
In spiritual traditions and cultures, the dragonfly is often associated with the soul and carries various symbolic meanings:
- Change & Transformation: The dragonfly’s metamorphosis from larva to a winged insect mirrors the soul’s journey of growth and evolution.
- Freedom & Independence: The dragonfly’s ability to fly freely symbolizes the soul’s aspiration to break free from fears and limitations.
- Vision & Clarity: With their exceptional eyesight, dragonflies represent the soul’s quest for clear vision and insight.
- Harmony & Balance: The dragonfly’s effortless flight embodies the soul’s desire for balance and harmony between mind, body, and spirit.
For me, the dragonfly also signifies the ability to navigate life’s complexities with grace and ease, moving between different realms of reality. It reminds me to tap into my inner wisdom for clarity and vision, and to release old patterns that hinder my growth and transformation. The dragonfly inspires me to pursue my dreams and reach my full potential, just as it soars effortlessly through the air.
Spiritual Growth
Even today, the dragonfly remains an important figure in mythology, believed to inspire and guide those who encounter it on their path of spiritual growth.
So, the next time you see a dragonfly, remember it’s more than just a beautiful insect. It’s a symbol of courage, wisdom, and change, encouraging us to embrace transformation, live our soul’s purpose, and make our dreams a reality.
